UN independent human rights experts slammed Italy for new measures targeting Roma, or gypsies, but welcomed a decision by the authorities in Rome not to implement compulsory fingerprinting. An announcement by Interior Minister Roberto Maroni that he intended to send security forces into squatter camps across Italy to take fingerprints of both adults and children sparked outrage in Italy and Europe.
