A Slovak-Roma boy picks up a cigarette butt to finish it at a Roma settlement in the village of Lipany on 11 March, 2008 in one of many Roma ghettos in eastern Slovakia. The dropout rate of Roma children of primary schools is over 60 percent with only 3 percent reaching high school and only 0.3 percent obtaining a university degree, according to a recent Amnesty international report. After decades marked by genocide, severe discrimination and forced integration, the community’s situation has worsened since the fall of communism. According to social workers, reforms implemented by the previous rightist governement have deepened poverty without reducing unemployement which is still close to 100 percent in the Roma community.
