A convoy of 23 trucks carrying humanitarian aid from Moscow, mainly medicine and children’s food, arrives in Tiraspol City, 25 March 2006. The authorities in the separatist Transdniestr region, which stretches along 460 kilometers (285 miles) along Ukraine’s southwestern border, have refused to allow entry to vehicles and trains from Ukraine and Moldova after Kiev instituted new customs procedures for Transdniestr commercial traffic. The new procedures require commercial traffic to have a stamp from Moldovan customs.Transdniestr, which split from Moldova after a brief war that killed hundreds of people in 1992, balked, saying the measure would hand control over the province’s lucrative exports to Chisinau, whose authority Transdniestr does not recognize.
