TO GO WITH AFP STORY:BOSNIA-RAIL-TRANSPORT-FEATURE
An old cyrillic sign reading RRS for „Railway of Republika Srpska” can barely be seen from rust at old unusable and devastated wagon on the main railway station of the northwestern Bosnian town of Banja Luka, 21 October 2005. Ten years after the end of Bosnia’s war, the former Yugoslav republic’s outdated railways are a mirror of the country’s poverty and ethnic divisions. It is for now no more than a wishful thinking since even today, when train reaches the northeastern town of Doboj, on the country’s inter-entities border line, Republika Srpska engine and the train’s staff are replaced by an engine and employees from the Muslim-Croat Federation. The country has about 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) of railway lines and the cost of overhauling just one kilometer is some 500,000 euros (620,000 dollars). The announcement last week by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development that it has granted Bosnia a 70 million-euro (85 million-dollar) loan to upgrade its railways was welcomed with relief. Bosnia’s railway network was severely damaged during the 1992-1995 war, which left 200,000 dead, when they were out of order. AFP PHOTO STRINGER
