Pedestrians walk past the destroyed headquarters of the ruling Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party in Ulan Bator on July 3, 2008, after the deadly riots on July 1. In 1990, students and dissidents marched peacefully through Sukhbaatar Square in the centre of Mongolia’s capital, bringing down seven decades of communist rule without a shot being fired. This week, another group of young men and women marched again over the nation’s political fate with very different results. The violence that played out in Ulan Bator on July 1 ended in the deaths of five people, with police firing tear gas and rubber bullets to contain the roughly 8,000 protesters before soldiers were called in as back-up.
